Interesting facts about lactase deficiency

An international team of scientists conducted a DNA study on 30 buried people at an archaeological site located in the Hungarian Lowlands. The remains, which were taken as a base, were more than 8,000 years old. The results of the analyses were published in Nature (one of the oldest and most authoritative scientific journals) and state that lactose intolerance before the Ice Age was characteristic of all mankind. e. Subsequently, it became a significant advantage in the struggle for survival, as the nutritional properties of milk were beneficial to the survival of tribes. Today, the presence of the gene that allows the digestion of dairy products without severe consequences for the body is a kind of test for belonging to the indigenous population of Europe, which has lived on the continent for at least 6,000 years. The high percentage of people with lactose intolerance suggests that these people include a large number of Asian immigrants who migrated in waves to the European continent before the 16th century. For example, Swedes and Dutch have 1 to 3 percent of such people, while Finns and Russians have 16 to 19 percent.

The high proportion of Russians with lactase deficiency compared to other Europeans can be explained not only by the large number of Asians, but also by the low consumption of dairy products. Until the beginning of the 19th century the number of cattle was low and productivity was rather low. For example, in Western Europe the average amount of milk produced by one cow per year, reached 2 thousand liters, and in Russia – not more than 600 liters.

Another interesting fact is a study published in the journal Nature. According to the scientific experiment, people with an intolerance to milk sugar have a reduced risk of developing cancer of such organs as the lungs, breast and ovaries. According to scientists, the high level of consumption of dairy products in North America and Eastern Europe may be responsible for the high percentage of cancer patients in those areas.
